CESEF
Cost Effective, Social and Environmentally Friendly
Building Materials and Construction Techniques

"SHARE AND SHOP" workshop, 23rd - 25th May 2007

Concept Paper

CESEF is a technology transfer project implemented by skat_consulting and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation. CESEF (Cost Effective, Social and Environment Friendly, Building Materials and techniques) was initiated in Nepal from January 2005, which concentrates mainly on providing "Clean Building Technology" solutions for the country. The purpose of this project is to provide access to field-tested sustainable building material production systems for small and medium enterprises. The programme focuses on improvements of three core indicators, Economics, Environment and Social components through cost optimization, reduction of embodied energy and local job creation in this sector.

We recognize that proper know-how and hands on experience in the relevant subject matter is required for development and implementation of any projects. Knowledge is a key for the successful implementation; hence, access to know-how and best practices is the prior need for sustainable developments of such innovative building products.

Yet, the Traditional knowledge management approach usually taps, existing knowledge within formal systems such as databases and magazines. The kind of dynamic "know-how" that makes a difference in practice requires the participation of practitioners who are fully engaged in the process of creating, refining, communicating, and using knowledge. Thus, it is necessary to bring such practitioners together to enhance mutual learning, constructive face-to-face interaction and to allow to build valuable networks for future collaboration.

In order to initiate a community of practice in the sustainable building material sector, we would like to organize a small international exhibition and Forum to share and shop the knowledge amongst practitioners who are active in the innovative building material production and its application. It is an information market for sharing and learning where all parties contribute information and knowledge for creating new and innovative ideas.

Objective:
  • To exhibit new and innovative building materials and technologies that have the potential to create jobs, are affordable and ecologically sustainable.

  • To discuss amongst the practitioners, the success stories and the limitations involved in the production, application and dissemination of innovative building materials and technologies.

  • To create Practitioners' network (Community of Practices) at the regional level where knowledge is created, shared, organized, revised and passed on within and amongst this network.
Venue: The exhibition / Forum will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal

Date: 23rd to 25th May 2007
